In anticipation of pride, this is a poem about my girlfriend (now fiance) and I farting. I farted in front of her for the first time on our third date. I tried to hide it at first, taking her by the shoulders and moving her across the kitchen. It was too obvious. We laughed and laughed and haven’t hid a single fart from each other since. I like to remember that poetry can be about anything; it can blend the serious and deep with the comedic and trivial, like life. Alas, a poem about farting:
I Can’t Fathom Not Being Able to Fart Together
audibly & anywhere / even when our bodies are pressed together & we’re short of breath & our faces have formed into focus, we laugh, & lucky for us, we both find laughing sexy & too, the intimacy that is being all body / don’t know how some couples do it—keep this part hidden / we fart in public like a secret language, share that knowing look like we’re rebels making a new world / where the weirder the better, the weirder the wetter / I don’t even mind when you fart on my lap or as our butts touch in bed / don’t mind at all, even if I act pretend mad, no, I think, how amazing, this trust we don’t have to wonder about / that allows us to revert to the last year of childhood where we did not know self-consciousness & just be / two girls in love / sharing bodies & giggling
Notes:
I am slowly crafting some special pride items to go on my Etsy. The first is a print that reads, “we are just two girls in love, sharing bodies & giggling”.
